"We are delighted to work with WRAP to provide invaluable advice and information on waste and recycling for the hospitality industry. In a climate of complex regulations governing waste reduction, managing waste has become an increasingly important issue for our profession"
Linda Martin, HCIMA Programmes Director
With the aim of boosting sustainable waste management within the hospitality industry, a series of fact files have been launched by WRAP and the Hotel & Catering International Management Association (HCIMA).
The fact files, five in all, provide advice to hospitality businesses to help them take available opportunities to reduce waste, save costs, recycle and stay legal.
The fact files were produced with input from the Centre for Environmental Studies in the Hospitality Industry (CESHI), part of Oxford Brookes University.
WRAP says that research has shown that hospitality waste is generally heavier than that from other parts of the service sector.
The reduction or diversion of wastes that currently go to landfill will avoid landfill tax which is applied on a per tonne basis and is set to rise by £8 per tonne from 2008 following the recent budget. This reduction in the amount of wastes going to landfill promises to significant savings on waste disposal costs.
The Fact Files
The five fact files fall under the following headings:
What waste costs you
This introductory fact file helps businesses to understand the benefits of dealing with waste properly, such as reducing waste disposal costs. The fact file also sets the record straight on some common misconceptions.
Keep it legal
This fact file is a helpful summary of the key waste regulations for businesses, including Duty of Care regulations.
What’s the right waste contract for you?
Choosing the right contract is vital. This fact file outlines the different types of contract and also provides information on contract terms.
Reducing waste
This fact file helps to calculate the amount of waste being generated. This is essential as if businesses don’t know what they’re producing, they won’t know how much they can reduce it by. The information will also help businesses to work with suppliers on reducing packaging waste and reviewing what opportunities exist for cutting back on unnecessary purchases.
Recycling waste
This fact file is all about making recycling work for business, including advice on materials that can be recycled and buying products with a recycled content such as office papers and hygiene products.
