Composting

CompostingComposting, and in particular central composting, is an important component of Government policy for diversion of biodegradable municipal waste from landfill, as required under the Landfill Directive. There is some controversy as to whether central composting is the best environmental option for the treatment of green wastes, though to meet Government Best Value Performance Standards, as currently defined, it is probably essential. There is now an accelerating movement towards the use of the In-vessel Composting (IVC) technique which under favourable circumstances allows the treatment of food wastes to statutory standards.
