Potential major US waste acquisition under discussion (14/06/2008)

NEW YORK, June 13: Waste management company Republic Services Inc. announced today (Friday) that it is in discussions to acquire Allied Waste Industries Inc in a share deal said to be worth in the region of $6.8 billion.

The deal would involve the US's second ranking waste management company in Allied Waste - Waste Management Inc is the industry's leading waste hauler.

Allied Waste Industries Inc, based in Phoenix - Arizona, is a non-hazardous solid waste management company.  The company serves approximately 10 million residential, commercial and industrial customers and has a network of over 700 collection companies, transfer stations, landfills and recycling facilities, according to the company's web site.

Republic Services, based in Fort Lauderdale, provides non-hazardous solid waste collection services in the  commercial, industrial, and municipal markets, via 140 collection companies, 92 transfer stations, 59 solid waste landfills and 32 recycling facilities, according to the company's web site.
