Cory Environmental acquires Hafod Quarry landfill site (03/09/2008)

London:  Cory Environmental Resource Management, part of Cory Environmental, has bought Hafod Quarry and Landfill site in Johnstown, near Wrexham.  The site was obtained from Mersey Waste Holdings, a wholly owned arms length company of Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority and associated Merseyside authorities.

"It’s important for us to continue to increase our landfill bank so we’re very pleased to add Hafod to our portfolio of sites across the UK"
Alistair Holl, Director of Cory Environmental

The Hafod site was opened in 2006 amidst considerable controversy. Mersey Waste Holdings (MWH) faced much opposition in August of that year, when the first lorry carrying waste arrived at Hafod Quarry. A police presence was required to control the situation and protesters had to be removed from the path of vehicles.

The site now accepts a range of non-hazardous waste from local businesses and homes and it is being progressively restored to grassland and woodland.  Final restoration of the site is expected to be completed ahead of schedule according to Cory Environmental.

There is also a Special Area of Conservation which is outside the actual waste disposal area of the site and protected from waste operations.

The company says it will implement the high environmental standards that the company sets at all its facilities, and also look at ways in which the future operation of the site can be improved.

Cory Environmental is one of the UK’s leading recycling and waste management companies and employs over 1000 people at over 30 sites. It provides a wide range of integrated services from street cleansing and municipal waste collection to recycling, transfer and disposal.

Alistair Holl, Director of Cory Environmental, said:

“It’s important for us to continue to increase our landfill bank so we’re very pleased to add Hafod to our portfolio of sites across the UK. Cory has an excellent track record of high operational standards across all of our facilities which we will continue to implement at Hafod.”
