"Dow Corning has taken a major step in adopting this technology to convert its waste into products needed in its chemical manufacturing process. We are pleased to partner with companies such as Dow Corning and Veolia who are committed to sustainable manufacturing by finding low cost and environmentally sound alternatives to traditional waste treatment"
Jeff Surma, IET Chief Executive
RICHLAND, Wash., Oct. 1 -- Integrated Environmental Technologies, LLC ("IET") has announced contracts with Dow Corning Corporation and Veolia Environmental Services for the USA’s first plasma- based gasification process to recycle hazardous waste, according to PRNewswire.
IET will install its patented Plasma Enhanced Melter(TM) (PEM(TM)) technology at Dow Corning's plant in Midland, Michigan and a world leader in waste management, Veolia, will operate the new facility.
Hazardous chlorinated organic liquids produced at Dow Corning's plant will be reprocessed into aqueous hydrochloric acid (HCl) and clean hydrogen rich synthesis gas (syngas). Dow Corning gets the double benefit of recycled raw materials and potentially energy availability, as well as saving on waste disposal costs previously incurred.
IET's plant will convert more than 6600 tons per year of liquid hazardous waste and produce 12 million pounds per year of HCl and 10.5 million BTU per hour of syngas. Design and procurement of the facility began in the summer of 2007 and it is expected to be online in mid 2008.
A major advantage of the PEM™ system results from nearly total destruction of organic materials and very low emission of hazardous air pollutants, according to IET. These low emissions improve the likelihood of obtaining an air quality permit and achieving public acceptance. The company emphasises that the process is not incineration - there is no burning.
Peter Cartwright, Dow Corning’s Executive director for Health and Safety said:
"We realize the best way to advance our vision of sustainability is through eagerness to change and a willingness to invest in the best technology available. This is an opportunity for Dow Corning to implement this innovative and environmentally sound manufacturing technology and also see if it has application in our other facilities."
The PEM(TM) system has shown to be effective for a broad variety of waste streams and IET has already sold and installed several commercial units, according to the company:
2003 - Kawasaki installed IET's technology in Japan to destroy PCBs.
2004 - Kawasaki purchased non-exclusive rights to market the PEM(TM) system in Japan.
2005 - Global Plasma Corporation in Taiwan began operations at a plant using IET equipment to convert medical waste into electric power and to recycle used batteries.

Integrated Environmental Technologies, LLC
Integrated Environmental Technologies, LLC ("IET") (http://www.inentec.com/) provides high-tech solutions to the problems of waste accumulation and the need for clean renewable fuels. Through its proprietary waste recycling system, the Plasma Enhanced Melter ("PEM(TM)"), IET transforms municipal (household), commercial, medical, and most industrial and hazardous wastes into clean renewable products, such as ethanol, methanol, syngas and hydrogen, with minimal environmental impact and low costs. The system exceeds the EPA's standards for comparable facilities in all areas including: air emissions, water discharges, and solid waste generation, and comes closer to 100% recycling of waste than any other such commercially available technology, according to IET.
