"Proper recycling is a major contributor to the reduction of harmful green house gases and saves enough energy to power 1.4 million California homes and save up to 14 million trees"
Margo Reid Brown, CIWMB Chair
SACRAMENTO, Calif., US: Today is California Recycles day which is promoted by a partnership of the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB), the California Department of Conservation (DOC), the Progressive Bag Alliance (PBA) and the America Recycles Day organization. The purpose of the day is raise awareness of and encourage recycling throughout the state.
California Recycles Day is coordinated with America Recycles Day which is a unique nationally recognised day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and buy recycled content products.
Margo Reid Brown, CIWMB Chair said:
"Proper recycling is a major contributor to the reduction of harmful green house gases and saves enough energy to power 1.4 million California homes and save up to 14 million trees. California Recycles Day honors our commitment to protect our environment and highlight the many benefits of recycling."

The partnering organisations have invited Californians on this important day to:
- Find out what materials can and cannot be recycled in your community.
- Lead by example in your neighborhood by recycling.
- Recycle batteries, cell phones and other electronic waste.
- Email elected officials to ask them to increase funding for your
community's recycling programs.
- Tell five friends that recycling is the easiest thing they can do to
slow global warming.
"Californians play an important role in protecting our environment by recycling and helping turn materials such as beverage containers back into valuable resources," commented Bridgett Luther, DOC Director. "Recycling is one simple thing each of us can do every day to reduce our impact on the environment."
California has participated in America Recycles Day since it became a national observance in 1997 and Cities and counties have organized a variety of events which will take place throughout November.
"America Recycles Day serves as a great reminder of the shared commitment that all Americans have to recycle and one of the best ways to recycle is to bring your plastic bags back to your grocery store," said Isaac Bazbaz, Chairman of the Progressive Bag Alliance. "The new California Plastic Bag Recycling Act makes it easier than ever to recycle plastic bags by providing bins at large stores where customers can deposit their bags. This America Recycles Day, Californians everywhere can make a difference by getting their plastic bags and recycling them at a participating store."
It is expected that thousands will pledge to increase their efforts to reduce, reuse, recycle and buy recycled. Activities reach a peak on November 15 each year, when people across the United States become better informed about the importance of recycling at home, work and school and buying recycled products.
"By making a pledge to recycle, Californians will be joining others across the nation who are committed to the reduction, reuse, recycling and responsible disposal of resources," said Bob Hollis, an America Recycles Day representative. "Even a small shift in attitudes and actions, multiplied many times over by others accepting this challenge, can change the world. Every little bit helps."
