Waste Treatment and Reprocessing

Waste Treatment and ReprocessingA major challenge is the need to divert the biodegradable element of MSW from landfill under the targets set in the Landfill Directive, 1999. Failure to reach these targets could lead to substantial financial penalties for the UK. To divert the progressively increasing quantities of waste to achieve targets will require a large number of treatment plants across the UK of a variety of types and often utilising advanced technology. Government’s determination to comply with the Landfill Directive is illustrated by the introduction of the system of statutory landfill allowances for individual waste disposal authorities under the LATS scheme. The waste treatment news is summarised below and you can use the links provided to gain further insight into treatment issues.
