"SITA UK believes its proposals, which rely on tried and tested technology, are the best option for reducing the amount of local waste being sent to landfill in Perth and Kinross"
John Grainger, SITA UK general manager for Scotland
Perth and Kinross planners in Scotland, have approved the construction of an energy from waste (efw) plant at Binn Farm near Glenfarg. They have also given planning permission for a materials recycling facility (MRF) following a planning submission from Sita UK.
The efw plant will have a capacity of 60,000 tonnes per annum, producing approaching 5 MW of electricity and the MRF will have a capacity of around 16,000 tonnes per annum.
Residual waste following recycling activity will be treated at the efw plant, while materials collected by Perth and Kinross kerbside recycling services will be processed at the MRF.
The new facilities should be operational by 2013.
John Grainger, SITA UK general manager for Scotland said:
"SITA UK believes its proposals, which rely on tried and tested technology, are the best option for reducing the amount of local waste being sent to landfill in Perth and Kinross.
He continued, “Recent policy announcements form the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Convention of Local Scottish Authorities (COSLA) have both backed energy from waste with COSLA calling it ‘one component of a sensible and practical waste strategy."
