Cory signs contract for new Wandsworth Materials Recovery Facility (15/09/2008)

London:  Western Riverside Waste Authority (WRWA) and Cory Environmental (Cory) are to construct a new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Inner London, under a contract signed last week.

The MRF will be constructed on WRWA’s existing Smuggler’s Way site on the south bank of the Thames in Wandsworth.  The facility is to accept up to 84,000 tonnes per annum of co-mingled recyclables arising from Cory’s long term contract with the WRWA.

"While the new facility is vital for both Cory and WRWA it has a much wider importance as critical infrastructure for London as a whole to meet future recycling needs"
Fran Comerford-Cole, General Manager Cory (London Operations) Ltd
Development work is programmed to start later this year and the MRF is due to be operational in summer 2010.

The Western Riverside Waste Authority consists of the boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Wandsworth and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

The new facility will allow WRWA to be largely self-sufficient in sorting co-mingled recyclables on site and hence reduce vehicle movements. Cory will be intimately involved in the construction work by both overseeing and contributing to the construction of the facility.  However ultimately the building and equipment will be owned by WRWA.

Education is also catered for with the provision of a visitor’s centre providing facilities for local school children to learn more about recycling.

Fran Comerford-Cole, General Manager Cory (London Operations) Ltd, said:

"I am delighted that we have reached this milestone in the MRF’s development. While the new facility is vital for both Cory and WRWA it has a much wider importance as critical infrastructure for London as a whole to meet future recycling needs."

Cory Environmental is one of the UK’s leading waste management and recycling companies. It operates in 30 locations across the country, providing expert services in the collection, recycling and disposal of waste. Cory is also the largest lighterage operator on the River Thames.
