Chippenham, England: Wincanton, a logistics company and one of the leading UK WEEE recyclers, has announced that it plans to open a new recycling facility in the Midlands. The facility will be located in Daventry,
Northamptonshire.

The new plant would double Wincanton's current WEEE recycling capacity and the company plans to inject in excess of £5m into the facility. The plant should open later this year, subject to obtaining permission.

The facility will be developed and manufactured by German engineers, MeWa and will be capable of treating up to 100,000 tonnes of WEEE per year.

This is equivalent to over one million washing machines, nearly 100 million kettles or 715 million mobile phones, according to Wincanton.

The new site will complement Wincanton's existing facility at Billingham on Teesside and will also support national network of “sortation centres”. These centres identify those products that can be reused – the remainder being recycled.

The Billingham WEEE plant was the first dedicated facility in the UK , which opened in March 2006 at a cost of £4.5m.
