Deeside, Wales:  Closed Loop Recycling has chosen North Wales as the location for its second plastic recycling plant, which is to be located on Deeside, Flintshire.

The new facility will process 50,000 tonnes of PET and HDPE drinks bottles, which will be processed back into new food packaging - so completing the loop and diverting further waste from landfill.

Private equity funding has been provided by the Foresight Group and public sector funding from the Welsh Assembly with the level of  investment thought to be around £12 million.

Chris Dow, Managing Director, Closed Loop Recycling was delighted to be able to confirm the location of the second plant.  He commented:

“The second Closed Loop Recycling plant will allow us to make a real impact to plastic recycling in North Wales and North West England and we are delighted to receive such positive support from the Welsh Assembly. We are committed to an ongoing investment programme to build closed loop recycling infrastructure in the United Kingdom. We believe we are pioneering the future in packaging solutions”.

The new food grade plastic recycling plant will also create 50 jobs.

Closed Loop says major brands such as Solo Cup Europe, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Nampak and Logoplaste have already committed to buying the food grade plastic output from the second plant.

A 2007 study put the total number of plastic bottles entering the UK waste stream at around 525,000 tonnes a year - circa 13 billion bottles. The study also found that some 4.5 billion bottles were being recycled, with an estimated eight billion bottles being exported or sent to landfill sites, according to the company.
