" Our selection as preferred bidder underlines our competitiveness in the multi-billion pound PFI market where our commitment to landfill diversion and recycling is backed up by long-term infrastructure investment"
Kevin Hurst, Marketing & Communications Director of Veolia

Veolia Environmental Services has again achieved preferred bidder status, this time with its selection as preferred bidder by West Berkshire Council for a 25-year integrated PFI waste contract.

The Council’s aim is to provide a major boost to kerbside recycling in West Berkshire.  The proposed PFI contract will cover the Council’s waste collection, recycling, disposal and street cleansing services. It is expected to commence in October 2007 subject to the completion of negotiations.

West Berkshire Council’s target of long-term recycling rates of at least 45% will be supported by the introduction of kerbside collections of plastic bottles, cardboard and green waste in addition to existing paper, glass, cans and textiles service.

The Council has been awarded PFI credits of £28.49m which will contribute to the major investment in materials recovery, waste transfer, in-vessel composting and household waste recycling facilities. Waste arisings in West Berkshire amount to approximately 100,000 tpa.

"This new contract will ensure recycling rates of at least 45%.  This will make a huge contribution to protecting the local environment from greenhouse gases"
Geoff Findlay, Executive Councillor of West Berkshire Council

Kevin Hurst, Marketing & Communications Director of Veolia Environmental Services for UK and Northern Europe, said:

“Our selection as preferred bidder underlines our competitiveness in the multi-billion pound PFI market where our commitment to landfill diversion and recycling is backed up by long-term infrastructure investment.

“By implementing an integrated approach which maximises the efficiency of collection, treatment and disposal, the Council can benefit from improved economies of scale as it works with residents to meet increased recycling targets.”

Executive Councillor of West Berkshire Council, Geoff Findlay added:

“This new contract will ensure recycling rates of at least 45%. This will make a huge contribution to protecting the local environment from greenhouse gases. A recent survey indicated that West Berkshire residents overwhelmingly supported the principles of recycling and composting. Another step on the road to a cleaner, greener, West Berkshire!”
