'Its in the bag' as DEFRA calls for voluntary code (news in brief) (12/10/2006)

DEFRA and the devolved administrations have invited major UK retail groups to discuss a voluntary code of practice aimed at reducing the number of plastic and paper bags distributed to consumers.

UK consumers use an estimated 8-10 billion plastic bags a year contributing to waste and litter arisings.

This follows recent developments in the industry where some of the leading names have introduced schemes to reduce the use of disposable carrier bags.  DEFRA is now seeking to build on this work through a partnership approach.

Ministers are asking retailers to sign-up to the code which sets out targets and initiatives for the reuse and recycling of bags and which is aimed at reducing the use of disposable carrier bags and changing consumer behaviour.
