IKEA predicts major reduction in use of plastic bags (06/09/2006)

IKEA have been levying a 5p charge on the use of their plastic bags and now intend to double this to 10p.

The company expects its plastic bag levy to result in an overall estimated 97% reduction in the number of new carrier bags used by customers.

The 5p levy has been charged since June and the judgement is that of the 32 million bags given out each year, over 31 million will be saved and slightly less than 1 million used.  This would undoubtedly be a major achievment.
