"In approving our application, the council has recognised the important role that the Salt End facility will play in further reducing East Riding’s reliance on landfill and ensuring that more of East Riding’s rubbish is managed effectively and sustainably"
Robert Asquith, WRG
The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has approved the Waste Recycling Group’s plans for a new Energy from Waste facility at Salt End, Hull.
However, because the site sits on the border between Hull and East Riding, the Hull City Council also needs to consider the Salt End plans on 8th January 2007.
If approved by Hull, WRG will seek an IPPC permit from the Environment Agency to operate the facility. If all permissions are forthcoming, the company expects the construction of the Salt End facility to begin later in 2007.
Following a site visit and presentations from WRG and objectors earlier in the week, East Riding’s Planning Committee met to consider WRG’s planning application for the new Salt End facility.
The council's planning officers recommended approval of the WRG planning submission, and following debate on related issues, the Committee voted to approve the application.
Following the decision, Robert Asquith, WRG’s Group Planning and Estates Manager, commented:
“Waste Recycling Group is delighted with the committee’s decision to approve our planning application for an Energy from Waste facility at Salt End. In the past Hull and East Riding have relied heavily on landfill. This needs to change and new facilities are needed if Hull and East Riding are to succeed in reducing landfill, driving up recycling and recovering electricity from the rubbish left over."
He continued, “In approving our application, the council has recognised the important role that the Salt End facility will play in further reducing East Riding’s reliance on landfill and ensuring that more of East Riding’s rubbish is managed effectively and sustainably.”
