Pershore, Worcestershire, UK: Wychavon District Council are launching a green waste collection service with a difference – residents will be charged £30 per year - in a common sense approach to green waste arisings.
Despite the charge, residents are showing a keen interest and over 2,000 spots have been taken already by early bird residents and this number is expected to increase quickly as publicity cranks up - a limit of 7500 collections on an alternate weekly basis is the plan.
To spread the word on the service, the Council has posted leaflets on the service through letterboxes and put information in newspapers and on it’s website giving details of the new brown bin service.
The intention is that brown wheelie bins will take excess garden waste away for those who can’t compost or have too much for a composter to handle.
Councillor Anna Makison, Executive Board Member for the Environment and Contracted Services, said:
"Places are going quickly and we’re really pleased with the response we’ve had so far. It is first come first served though, so get in touch quickly to reserve your compostable garden waste collection service."
The Council says that 7,500 bins are available on a first come, first served basis with some geographical limitations. The cost is £27.50 a year for payment before 15th February or £30 a year for later payment. A deal for 2 or 3 years would save more again.
