Compulsory recycling in Brent

A compulsory recycling scheme is to be introduced in Brent Council's area on August 4.
Residents could face fines of up to £1,000 for failing to recycle appropriate components of their household waste

Efw facility a possibility in Blackburn with Darwen

The revised waste strategy for Lancashire, currently out to consultation, indicates that Blackburn with Darwen is considering Efw (energy from waste) as a possible solution - though all options are said to be open.

A site for a waste treatment facility has not yet been identified, though the strategy indicates it would probably be within the borough’s boundaries.

Shanks teams up with Wheelabrator

Shanks has teamed up with Wheelabrator technologies from the US to help to expand further into the PFI (private finance initiative) market involving bidding for contracts from local authorities.

The aim is to provide an additional energy-from-waste (Efw) capability to compliment existing MBT (mechanical biological treatment) capabilities.  Wheelabrator is involved in the operation of 21 Efw facilities across the States.

North Wales' first commercial scale composting facility opens

North Wales' first commercial scale composting facility was opened by Gwynedd County Council in June.

The new in-vessel composting (IVC) facility - supplied by TEG Environmental - has a 5,000 tonne annual capacity.
