Stay clean - stay healthy in waste (14/11/2007)

Liverpool, Merseyside, England:  "Stay clean and stay healthy" is the message from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to workers in the waste management and recycling industries.

HSE has issued a pocket card for workers which illustrates the importance of personal hygiene and protective clothing in avoiding infection.

The pocket card is presented in a fun way using cartoons, but clearly with a serious aspect also.

There are numerous bugs and microbes in waste just waiting to find entry to cause mischief.  This includes orally by eating with dirty hands or via exposed cuts.

The HSE card covers the basics of hygiene and protection with simple but cogent messages on washing your hands, wearing protective clothing, keeping cuts and wounds covered, amongst others.

As in the medical profession, it is important to keep reiterating basic health and safety messages so that workers do not forget and protect themselves and others.

Though a simple and humorous pocket card, it is nevertheless of great importance and a good reminder to workers in waste of the basic health and safety protection.
