Orangeburg, N.Y., US: -- Verizon Wireless Communications made an offer yesterday to recycle old wireless phones arising when folks receive new phones as presents over Christmas.
All phones collected are to be recycled or sold through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine(R) Phone Recycling Program and either phones or cash will be donated to help survivors of domestic violence, as well as having environmental benefits.
According to the company, Verizon Wireless operates the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, serving 63.7 million customers. The largest U.S. wireless company and largest wireless data provider, based on revenues, Verizon Wireless is headquartered in Basking Ridge, NJ, with 67,000 employees nationwide. The company is a joint venture of Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) and Vodafone (NYSE and LSE: VOD).
"It's amazing how a small gesture like recycling an old phone can have a huge impact. Over the past 10 years, our HopeLine program has kept tons of electronics waste and batteries out of landfills," said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro Region. "Equally important is the fact that HopeLine has provided wireless phones that serve as lifelines to domestic violence victims."
The company says that to date, the HopeLine program has diverted more than 200 tons of electronics waste and batteries from landfill. Almost 4.2 million wireless phones have been collected, nearly 1 million wireless phones were properly disposed of and more than 170,000 pounds of batteries recycled in cooperation with Call2Recycle(TM).
Verizon is recognized for its commitment to preventing domestic violence and raising awareness of the issue and was the first wireless carrier in the nation to collect and recycle old cell phones to benefit survivors having done so since January 1999, according to the company. Nationally, the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program has given more than $4 million in cash grants and more than 45,000 phones with airtime to domestic violence prevention organizations.
