Crawley, UK: Viridor announced earlier this week, that a major fire engulfed the waste transfer station at Crawley, West Sussex on Monday last. The fire is thought to have started at around 6pm.
Viridor operates the Crawley site on behalf of West Sussex County Council.
The fire was attended by fire crews from across Sussex and it took 60 firefighters through the night to extinguish the fire.
The company says that luckily no-one was injured but the fire caused severe damage to the waste transfer station building.
Both transfer station and Household Waste Recycling Site are now closed until further notice and the general public are being re-directed to other recycling sites in nearby Horsham, East Grinstead and Burgess Hill, says Viridor.
Peter Miller, Operations Manger at Viridor said:
“The fire spread extremely quickly through the building and I would like to praise both the staff and fire crews for their quick response and actions to the situation”.
